These were the scenes in Burnham-On-Sea’s Queen’s Drive late on Monday evening (August 27th) as fire crews tackled a car blaze.

Police closed Queen’s Drive for over an hour from 10pm while crews extinguished a blazing Audi opposite the junction with Stoddens Lane, as pictured here.

An eyewitness told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the driver had pulled his car over into the entrance to Bennetts Farm with smoke billowing from the vehicle.

He managed to escape unhurt with the help of a passer-by, but the car burst into flames, as pictured, and Burnham’s fire crews were called to the scene.

Crews used breathing apparatus, water jets and cutting equipment to bring it fully under control. Queues of holiday traffic built up along the road.

The Audi was completely destroyed and crews said they believed the cause of the blaze was accidental.

A fire spokesman said: “Once our crew were in attendance, the officer in charge confirmed one vehicle was well alight and got to work immediately to extinguish the fire with the use of two breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet. Once the fire was fully extinguished the crew ensured the area and the vehicle was made safe.”
