Work is fully underway on Highbridge’s planned new Aldi store, which is due to open later this year.

Sedgemoor District Council approved plans for the new Aldi supermarket on the Isleport Business Park, just off Bennett Road, in May last year.

It was granted despite some opposition from local business owners and town councillors, who said it could hurt trade in the area.

Our photos show work underway at the site this week, where a new Travelodge hotel and a fast food drive-thru will also be built.

The new access road will lead to the new businesses, which are set to create dozens of new jobs.

Construction of the new 1,804 sq metre Aldi store is due to begin in February with a planned opening due in the Autumn.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We plan to open our new Highbridge store in the Autumn this year. This will create up to 30 jobs for the community.”

A mixture of part-time and full-time positions will be created when the Aldi branch opens.
