Three youngsters were rescued by Coastguards and Burnham-On-Sea’s rescue hovercraft last night (Wednesday) after they got into difficulty in deep mud next to Brean Down.

Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston were joined by a Weston RNLI lifeboat and BARB Search & Rescue’s hovercrafts, at Uphill shortly after 5pm.

The three teenagers had waded out across the mud a mile from the shore to try and reach the sea, but with a fast incoming tide they were putting themselves in danger.

Brean beachwarden Dave Furber told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “They were a long distance from the beach at Uphill and were struggling in a dangerous area of mud next to Brean Down.”

“Using my loud speaker system on the beach warden’s truck, I urged them to stay where they were and wait for the emergency crews. The lifeboat crew arrived first to check on them and then the BARB hovercraft flew out with two Weston Coastguards to rescue them and bring them back to safety.”

They were checked over by the ambulance crew on the beach as a precaution before being released and given safety advice.

Burnham Coastguard Station Officer Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Given the state of the incoming tide, the three were putting themselves in a lot of potential danger. This was a good multi-agency incident, and it was very useful to have the beach warden on Brean Down watching from a high vantage.”

“The two BARB hovercrafts were on scene quickly to fly the three youngsters back to safety of the beach.”

BARB Operations Manager Mike Lowe added: “This was the third call-out of the day for BARB’s volunteers, after two call-outs in the night, and it highlights their immense dedication, for which I am extremely proud.”

“These incidents showed great multi-agency working between all the rescue services, with good training being put into practice.”

As the crews were leaving, a separate group of three mud walkers was spotted far out from the shore beyond the Grand Pier. The hovercraft was launched again to check on them before being stood down when their safety was confirmed.
