Record-setting fish reeled in by Burnham-On-Sea angler

-

A Burnham-On-Sea fisherman reeled in this record-setting catch during a Bristol Channel fishing event on Sunday (January 8th).

Aaron Devey caught the 15lb spurdog in the waters off Minehead on Sunday afternoon during an event run by Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

Nigel Devey told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a great catch – the heaviest spurdog caught locally and a new club record.”

“While spurdogs are not rare in the channel, it is unusual to seem them this big. As soon as it was caught and photographed, it was returned back to the water.”

The catch, from the boat Ultra White, came during a day-long fishing event run to start the year.

Spurdog are found in temperate waters around most of the UK, but more prominent around the western coast of England, Scotland and Ireland. They feed on small flounder, plaice, codling and sprats, and also on fish that swim in midwater such as herring.
