Early morning storm brings thunder and lightning to Burnham-On-Sea

-

The Burnham-On-Sea area was struck by thunder and lightning early on Saturday, as forecasters warned of more stormy weather over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The dramatic photo above was shot in Burnham’s Palmer’s Close shortly before 4am at the peak of the early morning electrical storm, which lasted for almost an hour.

It comes as forecasters at the Met Office warn people in the South West to expect a deluge of rain on Sunday and Monday, adding that it could cause problems on local roads.

The warning is in place for 24 hours, beginning at noon on Sunday.

The Met Office says: “A band of heavy rain is likely to spread northward through Sunday into Monday, with some locally torrential downpours and thunder possible.”

“There are early indications that this could result in some disruption, with sudden flooding of roads, transport routes, homes and businesses possible.”
