Talks 'continuing' over plans to shut Burnham-On-Sea Police Station

Negotiations are 'continuing' over the proposed closure of Burnham-On-Sea Police station despite a recent increase in local crime, it has been confirmed this week.

Following concern about a spate of crimes in the town, Burnham-On-Sea.com approached the Police for an update on whether the proposed closure of the Police Station is still going ahead as part of a cost-cutting plan.

A move to smaller premises at Burnham Fire Station or setting up a 'drop-in desk' at Burnham Library are among the alternatives under consideration if the Police Station in Highbridge Road closes.

Police spokesman Scott McPherson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "We are looking for a new option for Burnham-On-Sea police station as our current building is double the size we need."

"We are currently consulting with stakeholders and looking at options. Discussions are in their early stages."

He added that no dates have been set for the possible closure of the station, which was first announced two years ago.

Sue Mountsevens, the Police and Crime Commisioner, said last year that Burnham Police Station is considerably bigger than needed, as we reported here.
