New parking restrictions in Burnham town centre welcomed by firms

-

Businesses in Burnham-On-Sea town centre have welcomed changes to parking restrictions introduced over the past month.

Loading and unloading is no longer allowed along a busy section of College Street, between the junctions of Victoria Street and the High Street.

The new restriction – shown by short yellow stripes at regular intervals along the kerb – is aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion at busy times.

Among those welcoming the change is Julian Frost at Abbott and Frost estate agents in College Street.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Parking and unloading has been a big problem along this stretch of road for many years, so I welcome the changes.”

“It’s been dangerous for pedestrians and other road users when vehicles park along the kerb. Also, it’s annoying for staff when our vehicles parked outside our premises get blocked in.”

One nearby resident said the changes are “positive” in keeping traffic flowing along a busy stretch of the town centre.

However, she told Burnham-On-Sea.com that more needs to be done to create extra disabled parking spaces in the town centre, which she claims are “woefully inadequate.”

Two new car parking bays have also been introduced outside the former job centre in The High Street, as pictured above, where parking is now allowed for one hour between Mondays-Saturdays 8am-6pm, in line with most of the town centre.
