Burnham-On-Sea MP James Heappey has made a special appearance to celebrate St Andrew’s Church of England Junior School’s newly-elected ministers.

As part of Democracy Week, the school held its very own elections – and the children voted for ministers to represent them in each of their classes.

Before all the excitement of announcing the winners, Mr Heappey told the students what his responsibilities are as the town’s MP.

He then acted as returning officer and announced the results, which were met with great excitement from the school, and congratulated the winners on their new roles.

Mr Heappey told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I think it is really important the children learn about democracy and this is the perfect way to do it.”

“I congratulate all those who were elected. I wanted to make sure every one of them knew that by running for election, they have done a great thing and have already made a difference.”

“I hope they enjoy their year in office for their class.”
