Burnham-On-Sea firefighters tackled a big blaze at a waste landfill site near Bridgwater on Friday.

Crews were initially called to the site at Bristol Road, Walpole shortly before 11pm on Thursday evening but continued to tackle the blaze.

Fire engines from Bridgwater, Burnham, Taunton and Nether Stowey were called along with water carriers from Bridgwater and Yeovil plus high volume pumps from Wellington.

A welfare catering unit from Crediton and an Incident Command Unit from Street were also in attendance.

“The fire involved a waste pile measuring 100mx100m and crews were at work preventing fire spread,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Relief crews from Wells and Somerton attended from 4.15am on Friday morning (July 14th) and they continued with two attack jets.

Relief crews from Taunton and Bridgwater later attended, along with a high volume pumping relief crew from Wellington.

Crews liaised with contractors onsite and continued to dampen down hotspots using several water jets.

All resources left the scene at around 3.30pm. One appliance was due to return at 5pm to re-inspect and in the meantime, the supervisor onsite would continue with hourly fire checks.
