A Burnham-On-Sea runner will be among the hundreds of entrants taking part in a running series across Somerset for charity that starts in March.

Emma Curtis, who is a member of King Alfred Sports Centre, is taking part in four races in the ‘1610 Race Series’, totalling 35km in all.

Emma is running on behalf of the mental health charity Mind in West Somerset and Taunton.

She is starting with the Hestercombe Woodland Wander on Sunday March 5th before taking on a 10k at Bridgwater in April.

She says she was a reluctant runner to begin with: “I don’t really enjoy running but the team at King Alfred Sports Centre has been so fantastic in encouraging me.”

“I joined the gym to manage my Asthma and they have helped me so much with training and given me advice about weight training to help strengthen my leg muscles. I decided to run four races for Mind and I am doing it with a friend and our aim is just to finish all the races which will be a great achievement for us.”

Hestercombe Woodland near Taunton provides the setting for the 5K fun run on Sunday March 5th which heralds the start of a new running season with the 1610 Race Series for 2017.

The 1610 race series has proved to be very successful since its launch five years ago with more runners than ever before taking part and especially novice runners who have now got the running bug.

The Bridgwater Bolt 10K in April looks set to break records for the number of entrants and the Chard Chaser 10K in September is also increasing the number of entrants due to popular demand.

The 1610 race series consists of four 10k races, a sprint triathlon and our family 5k & 2k fun run – which are all located across the counties of Somerset and Dorset. The race series offers runners an opportunity for fundraising for a number of charities including the 1610 Charity of the Year, Mind.
