Burnham-On-Sea's former MP judges schools debating competition

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge students have taken part in a unique debating competitition this week.

King Alfred School's Sixth Form hosted and starred in the English Speaking Union's Schools' Mace, a prestigious debating competition held on Wednesday 29th November.

The other participating teams were all from the private sector: Bristol Grammar School, Badminton School, Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School and Millfield School.

The judges were Cllr Tessa Munt, who was the former Liberal Democrat MP for the Burnham-On-Sea area from 2010-2015, and Siobhan Casey, a solicitor advocate specialising in criminal, children, family and domestic violence law.

Representing King Alfred School's Sixth Form were Year 12 students Daniel Anderson, Megan Richards, Sophie Butt and Ishrat Syeda, pictured here.

"They should all be proud of themselves as they were just a single point away from going through to the next round," said King Alfred School's Head of 6th Form, Jonathan Gaskell.

"We would like to thank our two esteemed judges for their words of wisdom and for giving up their time to adjudicate proceedings."

The judges praised the high standard of debating during the event.
