New Highbridge Co-Op store to open in Morland Road next summer

-

Highbridge is to get a second Co-Op store when it opens next summer on the corner of Morland Road and Burnham Road.

The supermarket giant has this week confirmed that it will open the new convenience store in the summer of 2018.

It will be the second Co-Op in the town, with the main supermarket remaining just off Market Street.

The new Highbridge Co-Op will be similar in size to the Co-Op store in Berrow which opened earlier this year. It will have 15 parking spaces.

The land was previously occupied by the former Morlands Industrial Park, which shut in October 2014.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Highbridge Chamber of Trade Chairman Mike Murphy welcomed the news this week.

“Convenience stores do seem to be the current ‘mode’ – they offer a smaller, more compact range of products, but serve residents well by being located close to where people live,” he said.

“The Berrow Co-Op store is doing well and is proving very popular and I’m sure this one will do well,” Mr Murphy told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“It’s good to see ‘corner stores’ coming back into fashion. They have a strong social role as a brilliant place for neighbours to meet and communicate.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here in July that a revised planning application for the Morland Road site had been unveiled and consent was given.
