Burnham-On-Sea Police have sought to reassure residents about safety after the murder of a 40-year-old man in the town earlier this week.

As Bunham-On-Sea.com first reported yesterday, a murder probe has been launched after the ‘suspicious death’ in Churchill Close, just off Worston Lane, shortly before midnight on Monday (July 10th).

The man was assaulted and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 43-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody.

DCI James Riccio from Avon and Somerset Police told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Specialist crime scene investigators have been examining the scene while there is also an increased police presence in the area for reassurance.”

“We’re aware this will have an impact on the wider community and I’d like to reassure people we believe this to be an isolated incident. Anyone with any concerns is encouraged to contact their local neighbourhood team.”

He went on to say: “This investigation is at a very early stage and we are doing everything possible to determine how the man died.”

“We’re treating the death as murder due to the injuries the man received.”

“His next of kin have been informed and specially trained officers are offering support to his family.”

“Two people have been arrested and are currently in custody for questioning.”

A post-mortem examination will be carried out by a Home Office pathologist in due course along with formal identification.

Several residents in the area told Burnham-On-Sea.com of their ‘shock’ at seeing Police in the close.

One added: “I woke up to find Police and forensics and large part of the close taped off. It was very unsettling and upsetting.”

Another said: “This is usually a very quiet cul de sac so it’s quite a shock to see this happening here.”
