Burnham-On-Sea baker’s winning pie goes into commercial production

-

Burnham-On-Sea Food & Drink Festival’s Champion Baker has seen her winning pie go into commercial production this week.

Cathy Bird was judged to have the designed the best pie filling during a competition at last autumn’s festival.

The competition, sponsored and co-judged by The Retreat Caravan Park, saw local bakers vie for the chance to have their pie flavour combination become part of the range for local pie maker, The Humble Pie Co.

Cathy told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I love making pies and other savoury treats so I jumped at the chance of entering the Great Burnham Bake Off competition.”

“To come up with a new pie filling for the Humble Pie Company to put into production was too good an opportunity not to be miss.”

After a bit of research at the local farmers’ market and their website, she decided which way she’d head with flavours and ingredients.

“I must have made about 10 different fillings which my family, work colleagues and husband’s workmates were always too happy to try. The overwhelming winner of the taste challenge was Moroccan Lamb.”

“I made the pie from scratch on the day of the competition and almost missed the deadline, but made it just in time.”

“After a nervous wait the winner was announced by the judging team and to my delight, I won!”

“I know it was a good pie, but there were some other great looking, and tasting entries, so I was genuinely over the moon.”

Sarah Milner Simonds, pictured right, one of the festival’s directors, went along to the Humble Pie Company factory to see Cathy’s pie begin its life in their range.

She said: “The production facility at The Humble Pie Co was amazing.”

“Pauline and her team operate with such exacting standards and seeing the first pies made, with Cathy watching over the whole process, was a great experience.”

“The company has a great history and now Cathy’s pie is a part of this.”

You can buy the award-winning Moroccan Lamb pie at this month’s Farmers’ Market in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday February 24th or buy it online for the next four weeks from www.humble-pies.co.uk.

The Great Burnham Bake Off will return at the next Burnham-On-Sea Food Festival on Saturday 27th May, 2017.
