Burnham-On-Sea’s Higos Insurance Services has backed a voluntary search and rescue service in the town with a donation towards a new noticeboard.

BARB Search & Rescue is an independent charity run by more than 20 volunteers who are on-call 24 hours a day and operate two life-saving hovercrafts and inshore rescue boats.

The charity’s noticeboard, used to display updates each time BARB is called out, was located on the northern end of its seafront station building, and had been in place for ten years until it was damaged beyond repair during a storm last year.

Therefore, the Higos Insurance Community Fund donated £350 to BARB to cover the cost of a new modern, back-lit noticeboard – which has been installed on the building this month.

Flick Franks of the Higos Community Fund said: “We are a local broker with a charity committee who are dedicated to supporting local community groups and charities.”

“A member of our committee happened to walk past the damaged BARB noticeboard and brought the matter to our attention. Knowing of the fantastic work BARB do in the Burnham-On-Sea area, we were very happy to provide the £350 needed for a new noticeboard to help raise awareness of the fantastic work BARB and all of their dedicated volunteers do. We hope the noticeboard will be in place for many years to come!”

A BARB spokesman said: “We are very grateful to Higos for generously coming forward with this donation towards the purchase of a new noticeboard. It is hugely important to us in promoting the work of our charity, informing passers-by about our latest rescues, and advertising fundraising events that are so crucial to a small charity like us.”
