St George’s Day family fun comes to Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge

-

St George’s Day is to be celebrated at both Apex Park in Highbridge and Marine Cove in Burnham-On-Sea with a line-up of free family activities today (Saturday).

The day of fun is being organised by Sedgemoor District Council’s parks team.

It will start at Marine Cove on Burnham’s seafront from 10am where visitors will be able to enjoy the gardens and make a woven Dragon Fly out of local willow following a training session with Musgrove Willows.

Those taking part will be able to take home their willow design with them.

Then at 11.30am a special St George’s themed walk will be led by Sedgemoor’s community gardener Jacqui Strong.

The free guided walk will proceed from The Esplanade to Apex Park and all ages of walkers are welcome to join in.

The walk will be approximately 1.5 miles long and will follow a flat route. Walkers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and sign-up from 10am at Marine Cove.

Walkers will be encouraged to test their observation skills to find a story along route about St George.

The walk will end at Apex Park where from 11am until 2pm there will be art and craft activities with a St George’s Day theme.

The activities will include a dragon hunt around the park with a reward for those who succeed on their mission. Sedgemoor Model Boat Club will also be on hand with special dragon boats on the lake called Lucinda and Baby Lucy along with St Andrew’s Church running “Messy Church”.

There will also be a chance to plant some ‘snap dragon’ seeds for those who are green-fingered and if you like balloons then Balloonitude will be on hand creating themed balloon models.

Children are invited to attend any of the events in fancy dress as a Princess or a Knight, or even a dragon!. Children must be supervised at all times by parents or guardians. Visitors are welcome to attend any of the activities.

Lizzie’s Kitchen, currently a finalist in the Western Daily Press Food and Farming Awards, will also be open at Apex Park offering some great snack and healthy options from her airstream van.

The event will see the friends groups from both of Sedgemoor’s Green Flag award-winning parks working together on the joint fun day. There will be the chance to talk to the Friends and find out how to join the groups and get involved in future activities.

There will also be a chance to find out more about the regular health walks that take place from Marine Cove on the last Wednesday of every month.
