Wildlife carers near Burnham launch shoe box food appeal for animals

The team at Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre near Burnham-On-Sea have this week issued an appeal for local people to donate a shoe box full of goodies for wild animals being looked after this winter.

“We’d be ever so grateful for your donations if you you could fill a shoebox with goodies that will help us look after the animals in our care this winter,” says a Secret World spokesperson.

The shoe boxes for badgers can contain Dog meat (any variety), Dog biscuits (any variety), Custard creams (for weaning badgers), Dog Kong toy (for enrichment while they are with us), Peanuts (badgers love them).

Shoe boxes for foxes can contain Dog meat (any variety), Dog biscuits (any variety), Chew toy (for enrichment while they are with us), Dog Kong toy (for enrichment while they are with us).

For hedgehogs, the shoe boxes can include Cat meat (any brand but needs to be meat or poultry flavoured in jelly, no fish or gravy varieties), Cat biscuits (any brand but needs to be meat or poultry flavoured, not fish), Dried mealworms, Sunflower hearts, and a Toothbrush (this is used when they are bathed for certain medical treatments).

Squirrel shoe boxes can contain Squirrel mix ( we recommend Ark wildlife squirrel mix – whole nut), Small animal hammock, Rodent chew toy, and Peanuts.

All the shoeboxes can be sent to or dropped off at: Secret World Wildlife Rescue, New Road, East Huntspill, Highbridge, Somerset, TA9 3PZ.
