Deadline nears for Burnham-On-Sea poetry competition entries

-

Burnham-On-Sea wordsmiths are being asked to put their creative writing skills to the test and enter a poetry competition being run by an opticians in the town to mark World Poetry Day.

Specsavers in Burnham High Street is looking for poems not longer than 250 words and based around the theme of eyes and sight.

The winner in the adult category (over 12 years) will receive a voucher for £200 to spend in store while a runner up will receive £150 to choose a pair of frames of their choice.

Chocolate will also be up for grabs in the children’s category with first, second and third prizes awarded.

The closing date is Monday 4th April when entries need to be placed in the box in-store. The winners will be announced on Monday 11th April.

“We’re sure there are a lot of creative people in Burnham and we are looking forward to judging the entries,” says Rama Venkat, store director at Specsavers in Burnham.

“It seemed to make sense to have a theme of eyes and sight and we’re hoping people will take inspiration from this to come up with some interesting entries. For the duration of the competition, we’re referring to the town as ‘Burnham-on-See’ as this seems particularly fitting and captures the spirit of what we are trying to achieve.”

“With the weather getting better and the school holidays nearly upon us, we hope that it will inspire people to enter. We’re not looking for the next William Wordsworth, but a poem that makes us smile is important so why not have a go?”
