-

A multi-agency search was called off on Monday after a missing man was found safely following a huge operation involving Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards, Police, hovercraft and lifeboat crews.

56 year-old man Mark Phillips, from Wellington, was found in the Steart Marshes area.

He had goibe missing early on Sunday morning – and his car was found unattended in the Steart Marshes late on Sunday evening.

Police initially launched the operation on Sunday to find the man and Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and crewmembers from BARB Search & Rescue were called out just after 9pm last night to carry out a foot search of the shoreline along the Steart peninsula and nearby Parrett estuary.

Two RNLI lifeboats were also launched from Burnham to search the river banks and tideline towards Hinkley Point.

When a set of footprints was spotted in the mud of the river, the Coastguard helicopter was also flown in to scour the area – but without any sign of the missing man being found.

Crews were stood down at 2am and investigations continued on Monday morning.
