A Burnham-On-Sea metal detector enthusiast has carried out one of his most unusual searches to date after being called in by a Berrow couple to find the buried ashes of their mother-in-law in their garden.

Morley Howard, a Burnham-based metal detecting user, was asked by the family to scour the garden for a metal cannister containing the ashes of their relative, which had been lost during changes to the layout of their garden.

Morley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The metal cannister had been buried under a rose in the garden several years ago but the exact location was not known.”

“Due to having some building work the family was eager to find the cannister and relocate her resting place. They’d searched for themselves with no joy which is why I was called in to help.”

“Using my powerful XP Deus metal detector, I quickly found a signal. The builders had laid a patio over the top of the cannister but luckily we were able to dig around from the side to recover it.”

Relative Penelope Jackson thanked Morley, adding: “He was great – he quickly found the cannister and we’re now planning to re-inter the ashes and keep a very careful note of the location.”
