Man rescued from boat aground by Burnham-On-Sea hovercraft

-

A man was rescued on Sunday from an inflatable boat after getting marooned on a mud bank after the high tide.

A BARB hovercraft and two lifeboats were called out at 9.48am to the stricken boat in the River Parrett estuary near Combwich.

Hovercraft pilot and BARB Deputy Operations Manager Graham Hallsworth said: “Working closely with the lifeboat crew, we found the boat high up on a river bank.”

“One man onboard the rib was stranded by the high tide and was taken onboard the hovercraft and flown to the waiting Watchet Coastguard team nearby.”

“The man was very grateful to be rescued – he shook our hands and was relieved to be safe again.”

Graham added: “The boat would have been stranded for ten hours until the next high tide in the hot sunshine with no supplies.”

“This was another great example of close team working by the Coastguard, RNLI and BARB with a positive result in the end.”
