Burnham-On-Sea resident’s shock at discovery of large hornet

-

A Burnham-On-Sea resident has told of his shock at discovering this large hornet in his town centre garden this week.

The Abingdon Street resident found the insect – which is around three times the size of a normal wasp – on Monday evening.

“We were in the garden when we saw it land on our window and were amazed at the size of it. I have never seen one quite so big,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The bug is believed to be a European hornet, which can pack a powerful sting but is a relatively gentle insect that generally keeps out of people’s way. It tends not to be aggressive unless they people get close to its nest.

The more troublesome bug is the Asian hornet which can cause damage to bee populations. Asian hornets prey on honey bees, which are defenceless to their attacks.
