Burnham-On-Sea wildlife carers are warning residents to double check bonfires for wild animals such as hedgehogs on Bonfire Night.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue, based in East Huntspill, has issued the seasonal warning ahead of the traditional November 5th celebrations.

A spokeswoman said: “With Bonfire Night fast approaching, we urge everyone to check their bonfire material before lighting it up.”

“Hedgehogs and other small mammals and reptiles could be hiding amongst the debris. Please don’t let any of them end up like these four babies, or worse, that were brought in to us a little while ago.”

The four hedgehogs pictured below were found under a bonfire, and the tips of their spines were burnt off, while two others died.
