25-mile fundraising cycle ride from Brent Knoll raises £2,000 for charity

Brent Knoll’s fifth annual Chris Evans Bike Ride raised almost £2,000 for the British Lung Foundation.

Sunday’s bike ride saw more than 50 cyclists participating, starting at the Red Cow pub in the village and then heading across the Somerset Levels with a total of 25 miles.

The charity event, which was held in memory of local man Chris Evans, also finished with a barbecue attended by 120 people.

Chris passed away from a progressive incurable lung disease and monies raised from the charity event will go to the British Lung Foundation to aid research.

The raffle and auction raised more than £800, with auction prizes including a Team Sport go-karting experience, a luxury Estee Lauder hamper, a collectable Charlie Bear and a large joint of sirloin from Havercroft’s butchers.

The raffle was well supported with prizes including a lunch for two at The Swan Wedmore, a selection of Butcombe Brewery goodies, signed Liam Phillips baseball caps, a £30 voucher for Sanders Garden Centre and a family day pass at the Webbington Spa.

This year there was also surprise entertainment for the cyclists with a ukulele band playing at the half way point at The Crown in Catcott. Live music was also played at the barbecue from local man, Andrew Davies.

Jenny Evans, Chris’ daughter and one of the organisers, said: “We had fantastic weather for the ride and, along with the music and everyone’s good company, there was a lovely atmosphere throughout the whole day.”

“Thank you to all those who took part in the ride, and who supported and helped organise the event. My thanks also go to the individuals and businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and auction.”
