Discount retailer B&M says it experienced a “hugely busy first day” as it opened its new store in Burnham-On-Sea on Thursday.

The manager of the new B&M store, Dennis Chick, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The level of interest took us by surprise – we had a very busy opening day and received a lot of positive feedback from customers.”

The Pier Street store, which replaces the former Morrisons supermarket, was formally opened by Burnham’s Mayor with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, pictured below.

Mayor Cllr Michael Clarke said: “I’m pleased to see the store open and relieved that something is being done with this vacant site, with over 60 jobs being created.”

B&M’s Operations Director Martin Roberts said: “We’re feeling really positive about the creation of the new jobs and opening – we hope customers are delighted with their new store.”

The new store sells a wide variety of branded and own label products including toys, food & drink, pet products and health & beauty items.

Amid concern that the store may impact existing shops in the town, Burnham’s Chamber of Trade held further talks with B&M management and secured a commitment that the store will offer copies of the Chamber’s shopping guide brochure to promote town centre shops. It will also discuss other funding opportunities.
