Work to install a new £30,000 outdoor gym at Highbridge’s Apex Park is set to get underway today (Monday).

The state-of-the-art outdoor gym, which will be open to all for free, is being funded from £30,000 of community funds from local housing developers as part of ‘RLT2’ and ‘RLT3’ developer contributions held by Sedgemoor District Council.

The modern gym will include a cross trainer, arm pull down, shoulder press, spinning bike, chest press, seated rower, dips and leg raise unit, leg press and sit-up bench, plus space for warming up and cooling down.

The project will also introduce a new link path created near to the existing play facilities together with the gym equipment installed within.

All of the new gym equipment will feature QR codes that will allow users to see instructional videos when scanned using smartphones.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Sam Taylor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Works starts on the outdoor gym area this week and is expected to take around two weeks. There will be no disruption to the play area or footpaths during the work.”

“At a time when people are struggling to find money for gym fees or sporting activities this is a great way to get or stay healthy without having to spend a single penny.”

She added: “We are delighted with the new outdoor gym designs. These fantastic facilities will be free to use and suitable for all ages and abilities.”

“Sedgemoor District Council would like to thank The Friends of Apex Park and residents for working with us to support this fantastic project.”

“We are planning a personal trainer-led event for the grand opening so look out for further information nearer the time.”

Sedgemoor District Council will project manage the installation of the gym equipment and is also taking on future maintenance responsibilities.
