£8,000 handed to hospice in memory of lighthouse trail fundraiser Paul

A huge £8,000 has been presented to a Somerset hospice by a Burnham-On-Sea charity in memory of a dedicated fundraiser who died last year.

Burnham cancer support charity Petal handed over the cheque to St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton on Sunday (April 19th).

The huge sum was raised through donations collected during Burnham’s mini lighthouse trail last summer, which was overseen by fundraiser Paul Plume, 48, who tragically passed away last December after a brave battle with cancer.

Scott Woodberry from Petal said: “We were able to donate these funds because of the hard work and dedication that Paul, right, put into creating and making the successful lighthouse trail.”

“Paul’s commitment – along with Verity, Sarah and members of Highbridge and Burnham Artists (HABA) – allowed Petal to donate this terrific amount.”

“Paul spent his final days at the hospice before he passed away and that’s why Petal and Paul’s family thought it would be fitting to donate to the hospice who just do the most incredible work.”

Scott added: “I think that having Paul’s family to present the cheque to the hospice on Sunday would have made him a very proud man indeed.”

The 34 decorated 6ft-tall wooden replicas of Burnham’s iconic beach lighthouse were on show across the area last summer before being auctioned off.

A spokesperson for the hospice thanked the team for their generous donation, saying it would help the vital ongoing work of the organisation in supporting cancer sufferers and their families.

Petal is run by the Woodberry family in memory of Christine Woodberry, who also died after a battle with cancer.
