New Burnham and Highbridge healthy lifestyles project starts today

-

A new initiative to promote healthy lifestyles in Burnham and Highbridge is set to launch today (Tuesday, January 6th).

Running over 11 weeks, The Highbridge Health Plan will combine exercise with an in-depth approach to creating a healthy lifestyle.

The scheme seeks to help residents learn how to beat stress, relax, lose weight, eat healthily, get more exercise, and also feel better mentally and physically.

The launch will be held from 7-9pm at the Morland Hall in Pearce Drive, Highbridge. The project is being jointly run by 1610, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) and Sedgemoor Community Partnership.

1610 Health will be providing a weekly, low cost, fun exercise class aimed at those who don’t usually go to the gym but would like to get fitter.

The WEA will provide a weekly 2-hour healthy lifestyle course covering diet, nutrition, weight loss, stress reduction, assertiveness skills, healthy recipes, how to eat well on a budget and more.

The course will be free to those on benefits, or costs just £7.50 per week for others. Both the exercise class and the healthy lifestyle course will be held at the town’s Morland Hall.

Annie Vickerstaff, previously the NHS Health Trainer for the Highbridge and Burnham area, will be teaching the healthy lifestyle session as a WEA tutor.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We want to build on the experience of the NHS Community Pounds schemes previously run at Morland Hall. People told us they wanted something a bit more in-depth, so this course will be tailored to what local people want.”

The launch will be held on Tuesday 6th January 2015, from 7-9pm, at Morland Hall in Pearce Drive, Highbridge.

The launch night will be an open evening to which all Burnham and Highbridge people are invited. It will be an opportunity to find out more.

Kelly Burne of 1610 added: “1610 is dedicated to providing the local community with low cost opportunities to take part in regular exercise. We are really excited by this joint initiative and will be on hand to share our knowledge of the health and well being industry and offer our expertise to help get more people more active.”
