New gig rowing club holds boat naming ceremony in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A naming ceremony was held for a new Cornish pilot gig in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (November 21st).

MP James Heappey and Mayor Michael Clarke were among the dignitaries invited along to the ceremony at the town’s lifeboat station.

The event began with an introduction to the audience from David Humphrey, President of Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Club.

Mr Heappey said that he’s very supportive of the new rowing club and looks forward to going out onto the water on the gig later in the year.

Rev Graham Witts and Rev Sharon Eldergill form St Andrew’s Church then formally blessed the boat and its users.

Mike Price, the sponsor, explained that he had requested the gig be named in memory of his late partner, Jayne Campbell.

“It was a great event and superb to see so many people from our community getting involved,” the club’s Graham Wills told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The new boat will be manned by members of the town’s gig rowing club, run alongside Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Club. New welcomes are welcome.

Burnham Sailing Club was recently successful in being awarded £1,000 of funding towards the new gig rowing club by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.
