Burnham-On-Sea firefighters called to tackle thatch blaze

-

Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea were called to a fire at a thatched property near North Petherton in the early hours of Friday (April 10th).

Crews from Bridgwater, Taunton, Burnham, Wellington, Nether Stowey, Ilminster and Street were called to tackle the blaze at Coxhill Farm, next to Bridgwater/Taunton Canal at around 4am.

When fire crews arrived at the scene they found the whole property engulfed in flames and began battling the blaze using hoses with water from the canal.

A spokesman said: “The property affected was a two storey detached property measuring approx 15m by 10m, with an annexe attached. The property was 100% involved in fire.”

“The Environment Agency was also involved with the incident as this property is alongside the Taunton and Bridgwater Canal and every effort has been made to contain any water run off.”

Crews carried out a watching brief for most of the day. A fire investigation was carried out alongside Police CSI to determine that the cause of the fire was deliberate.

The property was later demolished by a mechanical digger due to the unsafe structure of the building. Crews then used compressed air foam to damp down hotspots.
