Burnham fire engine rushing to call-out is turned back by road closure

-

A Burnham-On-Sea fire engine was forced to turn around while responding to a call-out on Thursday (February 12th) due to the continuing road closure in Berrow Road.

Firefighters were called out to an incident in Brean at 12.40pm and, as they had been assured that emergency access would be provided during Wessex Water’s current sewer repairs, they drove along Berow Road but were turned back.

“Emergency access was not provided even though arrangements had been made in advance,” a Burnham fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Instead, the crew had to turn around and drive back along Berrow Road to Stoddens Road and then out to Brent Knoll to get to the incident in Brean.”

“It added over 10 minutes to our response time and, fortunately, the incident was not serious – it was a bonfire out of control at Brean Leisure Park that we managed to quickly extinguish.”

Meanwhile, Wessex Water is bringing in extra staff to try and complete the work early to mininise disruption over the school half-term holidays, which start today (Friday).
