Council issues business rates ‘cold calling’ warning to Burnham firms

-

Firms in the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area have this week been warned to be aware of cold callers offering reductions to Business Rates.

Sedgemoor District Council says several local companies have been ‘cold called’ by firms claiming to offer substantial reductions in Business Rates payments in return for a payment.

“It is important business owners check out the credentials of anyone visiting their property and are fully aware of the implications of signing any agreements,” council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“There should be no requirement to pay monies up front.”

She added that any businesses who have queries about their Rateable Value should contact the Valuation Office, who are responsible for the assessment of rateable values for local businesses.

She added: “Businesses can make an appeal direct to the Valuation Office without going through a third party.”

“The process is straightforward and the Valuation Office staff will assist any business owners directly.”

Any ratepayer with a query about the rateable value assessed, reliefs or exemptions, or changes of occupier or to the premises, can contact the Revenues Team at the council on 0845 408 2540 or 01278 435435 or by email at nndr@sedgemoor.gov.uk.
