New guidance is being issued to town centre shops and businesses in Burnham-On-Sea as part of a clampdown on pavement advertising boards.

After consultation with businesses, residents, councillors and council officers, Burnham’s Town Centre Manager has published a new guide that outlines the laws and policies for ‘A-boards’, displays and pavement tables and chairs.

The Town Council is keen to encourage pedestrians to use town centre pavements while also helping traders to promote their businesses.

Beverley Milner Simonds, Town Centre Manager, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A-boards are a really emotive issue locally – traders want to get the message out about their businesses; passers-by can label them as hazards; and other businesses call ‘foul’ when they perceive another trader has over-stepped the mark.”

“I have worked with planning, highways and enforcement to draft a straightforward guide to what is permitted, what isn’t, and how to apply for permission.”

“I know that there will be instances where traders will still feel aggrieved but I hope that by putting this all together in one document many will feel that a level playing field has been made.”

She added: “It is not my role to enforce the rules, I am here to try and assist businesses and help them get to the answers quicker. On this sometimes contentious issue I hope the guidance document will help.”
