A raft of improvements to Burnham-On-Sea’s town centre look set to be completed by the end of March 2015, according to projected new dates from the County Council unveiled this week.

At a Town Council meeting on Monday evening (November 24th), Burnham’s Town Centre Manager Beverley Milner Simonds, right, said the modernisation project is progressing well.

A schedule from Somerset County Council’s highways team indicates that new ‘street furniture’, to include new columns for hanging baskets and events banners, will be installed during early January.

A modern new paving and tarmac area in part of the High Street will form a new events area – and this is projected to be completed by the end of March.

Bev explained: “The County Council has scheduled the resurfacing work away from the worst of the winter weather and I will be seeking plenty of advance notice to ensure there is minimal disruption to traders.”

Meanwhile, plans to introduce eight new large advertising banners through the town centre to promote major community events such as last week’s Christmas Lights Switch-On and the town’s annual FolkFest were approved last night by town councillors. These will be free to book, although event organisers will need to get the banners printed.

The whole package of improvements amounts to £440,000 and is being funded by Tesco to offset the expansion of its Burnham store, along with grants from the Town Council and the former South West Regional Development Agency.

A number of other initiatives are also set to be delivered as part of the project. Town Clerk Denise Emery said the whole project is running to budget, although an extra £6,000 has been used from the council’s contingency fund to install a new high-tech electricity box in the High Street which will be allow event organisers to power music and lighting systems.
