A series of power surges in Burnham-On-Sea caused electrical problems for shops in the town on Wednesday morning (October 29th).

Several businesses at the northern end of Burnham’s town centre suffered a series of electrical surges just before 9.30am.

Staff at Scotts Furnishings in Victoria Street saw their fluorescent lights put on a dazzling display, as captured in the video above.

Matt Scott said they’d never seen such problems before, which lasted several minutes and ended with a power cut.

Western Power Distribution spokeswoman Irene Evans told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Unfortunately a bird flew into one of our power lines which tripped it and we had to turn some customers onto an alternative supply.”

“The fault occurred at 9.26am which led to a period of low voltage. Some customers were then off supply briefly,” she added. The firm apologised for any inconvenience caused to customers.
