Long-awaited pedestrian crossing in Burnham set to be installed

-

A long-awaited new pedestrian crossing will be installed along a busy road in Burnham-On-Sea despite delays, a councillor has confirmed this week.

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, pictured, initially announced last year that the project in Berrow Road would go ahead after he secured funds from Somerset County Council.

It is to be installed close to the Kathleen Chambers care home, operated by the Royal National Institute Of The Blind, near the Texaco petrol station.

While the project has suffered delays, Cllr Burridge-Clayton has this week vowed that it is still going ahead.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Berrow Road pedestrian crossing has been delayed but is progressing. During the consultation period, which ended in November last year, an issue was raised by a resident which led to the council’s traffic signals team having to investigate two further location options.”

“A safety audit was undertaken on these options and a preference has been chosen. A site meeting is taking place on or before 11th March and hopefully an agreement can be reached by all the parties involved.”

He added: “I would like to reassure everybody that the funding is still ring-fenced for this scheme and we are doing everything we can to implement the crossing as soon as possible. I will let everybody know as soon as a construction date is given to me. The preferred alternative location option is only a very short distance from the original scheme, and is indeed closer to the Kathleen Chambers RNIB home.”

A County Council spokesperson added: “The improvement programme has been extended to enable us to consider an alternative location option. Meanwhile, we continue to engage with local businesses and residents to ensure we implement the safest crossing option in the best available location.”
