Long delays for Easter travellers as M5 motorway is closed by car fire

-

Motorists faced long delays on the M5 motorway on Thursday (April 17th) after it was closed for several hours following a car blaze between junctions 24 and 25.

Fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and other stations tackled the blaze on the southbound carriageway, which started at 9am and led to long delays for Easter travellers.

A spokesperson for the fire service told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Two fire appliances from Bridgwater were mobilised following multiple calls to a Range Rover, towing a caravan, that was on fire.”

“Shortly afterwards, crews increased the initial attendance by four further fire appliances, from Bridgwater, Taunton and Burnham, for extra water.”

“Crews attended and fought the fire from both carriageways, so police closed that section of the motorway to all traffic until the incident was complete.”

“Due to the dual fuel aspect of the Range Rover, the fire was eventually brought under control at 10.45am.”

He added: “Crews used two main jets, one hose reel jet and two breathing apparatus to extinguish it and confirmed it had started accidentally. No persons were involved or injured and duty of care was left with the owner and Police Highways.”
