King Alfred School’s rugby team plays for Somerset in regional contest

-

A Highbridge school’s rugby team has represented Somerset at a regional competition.

King Alfred School’s Year Nine team represented the county as Somerset Champions in the South West State Schools Finals.

They competed against Beechen Cliff School from Bath, Churchdown School of Gloucester, Ivybridge College from Devon, Redland Green School of Bristol and Redruth School from Cornwall in a round-robin tournament for a place in the National State Schools Finals.

“King Alfred placed an admirable third place, claiming the scalps of Beechen Cliff, a school with a far greater rugby heritage than ours, alongside victories over Redland Green and Redruth,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The only blot on the day was a 21 point defeat that somewhat flattered Ivybridge College, two missed tackles resulting in a 14 point half time lead for the opposition that made the game very difficult. However, the battling spirit of the King Alfred boys meant that Ivybridge had to work incredibly hard to gain their third try.”

“The result of the day was holding the eventual winners Churchdown to a 0-0 draw, in fact Churchdown were relieved to hear the final whistle! Well done to all the lads that played and a thank you to the parents that came to watch.”
