Wet weather forced Burnham-On-Sea’s traditional August Bank Holiday summer fete indoors on Monday – but it was still a success with over £1,500 being raised.

Monday’s fete was held inside at St Andrew’s Church Hall and the Methodist Church Hall instead of the soggy Manor Gardens due to the inclement conditions.

Visitors were still able to enjoy a fun line-up of games, stalls and refreshments in both halls and local people turned out in droves to support the town’s hospital.

Tony Deahl, Chairman of the Hospital Friends, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that takings had exceeded £2,200 and that the final profit would be in excess of £1,500.

He added: “Although this total is below what we would have raised on a fine day, nevertheless it is a considerable one and will help to improve the lot of both patients and staff at the hospital.”

“This could not have been raised without the outstanding cooperation of a large number of people.”

“I would particularly like to thank Bernard Spilsbury, my Vice-Chairman and Fete Organiser, for his tireless work in reorganising the event following the Bank Holiday weather forecast. Also thanks to Burnham-On-Sea.com for advertising the change of venues, and the two churches who responded in our hour of need.”

“Local people are rightly proud of their Hospital and showed their loyalty in turning out despite the weather. Thanks are also due to them.”
