Children from a Burnham-On-Sea school will be holding a unique Fairtrade coffee morning at St Andrew’s Church in the town this Thursday (March 6th).

The children of St Andrew’s School will be making and serving coffee to visitors to promote the idea of ‘Fairtrade’, which they have been studying as part of their lessons on global education. There will also be a sale of Fairtrade products by the youngsters, plus themed displays.

Fairtrade promotes fairness in trading between the first and third world and allows third world farmers to keep a larger percentage of the price of their goods rather than it becoming a supermarket profit.

Vicar Graham Witts told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are now in the second week of Fairtrade Fortnight when the unjust trading relationships between the first and Third World are highlighted. We have all become familiar with the Fairtrade logo on products in our supermarkets from orange juice to chocolate to wine.”

“On Thursday, the children will be hosting a Fairtrade Coffee Morning in St Andrew’s Church from 10.30am-11.30am. During the Coffee morning they will be making refreshments made from fairly-traded tea and coffee. There will also be a stall selling Fairtrade products as well as displays made by the children. All are welcome.”

“I am hoping the community will be made aware of the need to protect people in the Third World.”
