Crime levels in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have fallen over the past year, according to new figures.

The new statistics show 567 crimes were committed in Burnham during the first eight months of the year, down from 647 in the same period last year.

In Highbridge there has also been a smaller fall, with 616 crimes committed in the first eight months of 2014, compared to 634 in the same period last year.

Inspector Andy Pritchard, pictured below, has this week cautiously welcomed the figures. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Whilst we are pleased that crime levels have shown a reduction, we are not complacent and there will always be new priorities.”

“Focusing on local issues in the community is important for long-term reductions in crime and this is key in our approach to policing in Burnham-On-Sea.”

“Information that comes from people who live and work in the area means that we are able to target problem areas and criminals which results in both the prevention and detection of crime.”

“Everyone in Burnham has an opportunity to meet with a member of the team to highlight any concerns or issues.”

In Burnham, the number of published crimes committed this year are January 56, February 41, March 66, April 82, May 64, June 93, July 83 and August 82. Over the same months in 2013, the crime figures were January 77, February 79, March 81, April 71, May 76, June 81, July 82 and August 100.
