Bridgwater chill lover Marc Brion was crowned the winner of an incredible chilli-eating competition in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday.

The contest, called The Great Burnham Burn-Off, took place during the fifth Burnham-On-Sea Food & Drink Festival, and was run by Clifton Chilli Club.

Different chillies of ever-increasing heat were eaten by the brave participants, watched by a large audience in College Street.

Marc and the runner-up Chris Williams both ate the Caroline Reaper chilli, with a strength of 1.56million Scoville, trigging an sped round where Marc was judged the winner.

Marc told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m quite proud to have won for a second time, having won the previous contest. It was really tough – the strongest chilli gets you in the gut. It felt as though I had a volcano in my stomach!”

This year, the chilli-eating contest had a warm up – its little brother The Hot Wings Challenge, which was won by Martin Palmer. It saw 12 hot wings and 10 competitors doing battle where the fastest to eat the spicy chicken to the bare bones won! The hot wings were prepared by Passion & Soul BBQ.
