Burnham-On-Sea traders boosted by busy Bank Holiday weekend

-

Tourism businesses in Burnham-On-Sea enjoyed a bumper Bank Holiday weekend as good weather attracted visitors.

There were busy scenes on Burnham beach as visitors soaked up the Spring sunshine, while many town centre shops also experienced an uplift in trade.

At several times, there were no free spaces in Burnham’s Pier Street car park on Sunday and Monday as hundreds of motorists headed into the town.

Paul Wheeler, who runs a Punch and Judy concession on Burnham beach, said: “It’s been a good start to the season – we’ve been busy with a steady flow of spectators through the weekend. Visitors and local peope are very supportive.”

Ian Jefferies, manager at Burnham’s BIARS tourist information centre, added: “I’m pleased to see the area so busy over the past few days. Many shops and businesses have had a great few days and we hope this is the start of a busy season ahead.”

Burnham’s traditional beach donkeys were also busy. Owner Debbie Banwell said: “The weather is always so imprtant and we had a dry, mild weekend which really helped us.”

Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade said traders in Burnham’s High Street had also experienced brisk trade over the weekend.

“The good weather and mini lighthouse trial that was launched on Saturday have been great in attracting extra visitors into the town with a stream of people visiting over the holiday weekend,” said a Chamber spokesman.

There were also busy scenes in Brean and Berrow as well, where holiday parks and the resorts’ beaches were busy.
