Dozens of home-made cakes, scones and bread went on display when local bakers competed in The Great Burnham Bake Off during the town’s Food and Drink Festival on Saturday.

Cakemaker Asta Howard, pictured above, won the overall champion’s trophy after her professional cake entry was judged the best entry in the show.

More than 20 bakers battled it out for the top spot – with the entries being judged by MP Tessa Munt, British Bake Off contestant Glenn Cosby and YouTube baking star Barry Lewis.

The competition, sponsored by Burnham’s Positive Wealth Creation, also saw prizes awarded to Robin Warren (best individual bread), Ellie Davey (best individual cake), Cathy Bird, above, (best individual scones), the Winstone family (best family entries). Merit awards were also awarded to Nigel Smith, Jay Taylor, Edwina Bishop, Liz Francombe and Katie Clarke.

Judge Glenn Cosby told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The entries were fantastic – it was great to see the enthusiasm shown was matched by talent.”

MP Tessa Munt added: “I’ve had the most fantastic afternoon – it was lovely to see cooks small and mature taking part. There was a lot of effort and originality shown. I don’t think I will eat for days after trying so many cakes, scones and breads – they were all superb!”

Barry Lewis added: “They were all great entries and it was difficult to know which to choose as winners – well done to all those who entered.”

And sponsor Alex Turco of Burnham’s Positive Wealth Creation said: “It was great to see such a high turnout of great quality entries – we are delighted to give our support to this wonderful event.”

The winner of the bread competition, Robin Warren, pictured right, has also won a free entry to the World Bread Awards sponsored by Tiptree and will be judged by Frances Quinn of the BBC’s British Bake Off.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com he was “really delighted” to have won and is looking forward to the awards.

Meanwhile, the next Great Burnham Bake Off will take place this autumn during October’s Burnham-On-Sea’s Food & Drink Festival – more details will be announced here in the run-up to the event.
