10,000 sq ft expansion of Highbridge Asda store wins go-ahead

-

Plans for a 10,000 sq ft expansion at Highbridge’s Asda store have this week been approved by Sedgemoor District Council.

As first reported here in January, Asda wants to refurbish its Caxton Road store and expand it with a new mezzanine floor for a cafe and extra space for more products.

Planning permission has been granted by the council’s planning department using its delegated powers.

The proposed update includes a bigger George clothing department and a new cafeteria while the footprint of the building will remain the same.

“We’re keen to provide more choice and a wider range of goods with wider aisles and more checkouts so that we can continue to provide for our customers’ needs,” Asda’s Estates Town Planning Manager Alan Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

A public consultation was held at the store in February to seek feedback from local residents. Hundreds of visitors viewed the proposals and dozens made comments.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback,” said Mr Jones. “Their comments showed overwhelming support for what we want to do. Their input was invaluable.”

The store will remain open during the refurbishment which will take place out of store hours over several months at a date to be decided.
