£8,000 healthy living boost unveiled at Highbridge sports centre

-

A new £8,000 health initiative has been launched at King Alfred Sports Centre in Highbridge this week to give local people free sports sessions.

Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman has unveiled a health and fitness initiative in conjunction with 1610 leisure trust to encourage local people to embrace healthier lifestyles.

Six weeks of free taster sessions are available to any residents, funded by Somerset County Council, with the aim of helping people of all ages and abilities to get fit.

The free taster sessions include activities such as basketball, cycling, guided walks, health and wellbeing seminars, as well as dedicated fitness sessions for senior adults.

Local residents, as well as community groups and sports clubs, are being invited to try out the activities and facilities at King Alfred Sports Centre. Funding may also be available as part of the scheme for some sports and community groups.

Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman, who secured funding for the initiative, said: “The 2012 Olympics demonstrated how we as a nation can benefit from commitment and investment in sport. By investing in initiatives like this we can help to build on that legacy but it is vital that local people come forward and take part in this scheme and have a say in how they want this money to be spent but also make a real change in their own health and fitness.”

“This is a unique initiative for Highbridge and it includes some funding for sports clubs and community groups who may need financial support. King Alfred Sports Centre has superb facilities on offer and local sports clubs should be quick to take up this opportunity and make a real difference to the health and well being of the local community.”
