Two windsurfers rescued by hovercraft and lifeboats at Berrow

-

Burnham’s hovercraft, lifeboats and Coastguards were called out to rescue two windsurfers on Saturday (May 26th) after they got into difficulty in strong winds and thick mud.

Coastguards were initially called to Berrow Beach at 1pm after the beach warden raised the alarm when he spotted the two men half a mile from the shore, struggling to return in strong offshore winds.

Burnham’s lifeboats retrieved the surfers to the sea’s edge and Burnham’s new hovercraft – which was undergoing training in the area at the time – brought the men back from the thick mud to the safety of the hard sand.

Burnham Coastguard Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The men were struggling in the winds and the lifeboats assisted them to the water’s edge while the hovercraft flew out to them and brought them back to the beach. It was a good joint operation.”
